It can be hard to find old school strains of weed in the modern legal market in Portland as most dispensary shelves are dominated by over-hybridized candy weed that lacks any real character besides some bag appeal.

That’s why, when I saw that The Dime Store, a small walk-in dispensary located at 3210 N Lombard St in North Portland, had some Purple Hindu Kush, I knew I had to go scope it out.

The reason why P.H.K is considered an old-school strain is because it’s genetic are tied back to one landrace strain and the inbred descendant of another. (Specifically, Hindu Kush and Purple Afghani which is a backcross of the Afghani landrace strain)

Upon opening the jar at the shop, strong scents of sandalwood incense and touches of wild flowers poked through the musky veil. A smell so good, I bought an ounce of flower.

In this article, I’ll be reviewing Purple Hindu Kush flower based on its appearance, taste and potency. Additionally, this P.H.K was grown by Savage Skunk Farms, a small family-owned business based in Grants Pass, OR.

Appearance:
At first glance, these buds remind me of the ones you see in High Times Magazine from the mid-1980s to the early 2000s. Just some classic modern-day kine-bud ripe with bright orange hairs.

Taste:
This batch of P.H.K has a strong black pepper flavor, followed by a smoky incense note. It can be a little off-putting if you only like fruity terpenes.

Potency:
According to the lab results, this batch of Purple Hindu Kush tested at 23% THC, making it a relatively low tester compared to most modern top-shelf flowers that can reach upwards of 30%.

However, I don’t shop by the THC %, I shop by the scent and the genetics of the plant. In my opinion, this strain is one of the most potent indica-hybrid strains I have ever had the pleasure of vaping in my Arizer Solo 2.

The high of this Purple Hindu Kush is stony to a tee; as it made my body feel deeply relaxed, and my mind come down to a gentle swirling motion. It was so hard to think straight on this strain; in fact, I had a really hard time writing this article initially because of how stoned I was.

Final Thoughts:
Overall, I really like this strain and find it to be very soothing after a long day of work. However, this is one of those strains that has a time and a place. For example, I think this strain would pair great with listening to the albums Go To Heaven or From The Mars Hotel by The Grateful Dead. Something bouncy, with a funky rhythm, to keep your mind entertained while your body is at a standstill. This is not the strain to write with…
