Lunch Hour: Kabuki Sushi & Grill

Written and edited by Ruby Lee Schembari

Finding an affordable, decent sushi restaurant that prioritizes quality over quantity is very difficult, akin to stumbling upon a gold mine.

To me, a restaurant that meets that standard is Kabuki Sushi & Grill, located at 8638 N Lombard St, St. Johns, Portland.

Over the past three months of living in the neighborhood, I’ve probably eaten here at least a dozen or so times because of how affordable the food is, especially during their regular sushi happy hour, which ranges from 11 AM – 4 PM, 7 days a week.

This time on Lunch Hour, I’ll be reviewing two rolls from Kabuki.

The Oregon Roll:

The Oregon roll consisted of a crabmeat mix with avocado and was topped off with salmon. Without any interruptions to the flavor, i.e., soy sauce, wasabi, and ginger, the Oregon roll tasted slightly creamy with tiny hints of fish. To be honest, it was a little underwhelming, especially since it was one of the more expensive rolls during the happy hour (It cost $10)

Something they could add to make the roll a little more unique is a touch of lemon juice to give it a little zing and make your mouth pucker.

The Maui Roll:

The Maui Roll was made with fried sweet potato, avocado, and cream cheese, which, when combined, created an explosive range of flavors, from sweet to cheesy. Honestly, of the two rolls I ate, the Maui was my favorite because of its bold, punchy flavors that straight-up kick your tongue like a donkey taking karate. I also love that this roll is only $6, making it a cheap snack.

In total, my meal cost $16, not including the $3.20 tip I left for the wonderful people behind this little hole-in-the-wall.
